We are cattle producers and use these on a plastic crib mattress in the maternity handling system when assisting a cow with calving. Simply put this on the crib mattress, place crib mattress at the rear of the cow, assist cow with delivery with a pull, and guide the calf down to the mattress safely. Calf then lands safely on the soft mattress, AND the sheet retains all of the calves birth fluids, it’s natural external biome. We then assist calf as needed with respiration, etc. The best part, simply remove the sheet and carry/transfer the calf to mom in the pen on the sheet. The elastic sides make this a breeze for a two person carry! In the unfortunate incidence that calf is deceased, you now have all the calves birth fluids on this sheet, which can then be used to facilitate an adoption of another calf to the cow. We’ve had tremendous success with this method of adoption during assisted deliveries. Amazingly, had one cow who lost her calf during birth, but we kept this sheet with her babies birth fluids on it in the pen next to mom for a day, during which time mom called and mooed to the sheet, sniffing it through the panel. Next day, we had twins off another cow, and commenced an adoption of one baby to the first mom who lost her calf. We cut the ends of the fitted sheet to tie around body of twin B calf (like a little calf vest), kept baby away from mom except for feedings, and this older cow successfully accepted the calf as her own in two days. Remarkable! Also, great fit on a standard plastic crib mattress. We do not wash or reuse them, though if these sheets endure the birth of a 100 pound calf and subsequent fireman carry of same by two people, I’d imagine it would withstand the sleeping needs of a 7 pound human baby.
